Raton hosted West Las Vegas for a makeup game that was postponed late last month and it was no runaway game for either the JV or Varsity Monday Night February 7, 2022, in fact the JV team came from behind for the win.
The JV game was close from the beginning with the second quarter being the tough one for Raton. West pulled out by 12 and as the quarter wound down Raton managed to go into half time down by six. In the second half of the game Raton did a turn around and tied the game at 40. At the third quarter buzzer Raton was up by two and from there it was nip and tuck as West threatened late in the fourth but missed shots hurt Vegas and Raton pulled it out. by three 64-61. Raton did 10 of 16 free throws in the fourth while West did 3 of 7 at the charity line. Another example of how important free throws can be in a close game.
The Raton Varsity took the early lead and never looked back, yet had to keep things moving to stay ahead. They outscored West in the first half but struggled with rebounds. At Halftime Raton went to the locker room with a 14 point lead 30-16. The West defense showed up in the third holding Raton to only six but the West offense couldn’t take advantage of the situation. The fourth quarter was another turnaround for Raton as they held Las Vegas to only six points while they scored 15. At the buzzer Raton marked the win column 51-31.
