Back and forth ball games for both Raton baseball and softball as the teams hosted West Las Vegas Thursday afternoon in Raton for a single game in this unusual season of high school sports.
Both West baseball (3-8) and softball (6-2) have had several games under their belts coming into the game on Thursday while both Raton teams have only seen action in three games each this season. the Boys showing a 1-2 record while the girls have a 2-1 record on the season.
The Lady Tigers had a slow start in the game with three up three down in the first while West tallied three runs. Raton came back in the third and after that it was a back and forth game. Giana Mares hit a three run inside-the-park home run in the third to give Raton the go ahead as they scored one run in the second. Once the final pitch was thrown West lead by two and took the win 10-8.
The boys game was going on down the street at Gabriele Field and it too was a barn burner of a game that came down to the last inning where West loaded the bases and took the lead when two pitches got away from catcher Chance Middlebrook allowing two runs to come in and West to take the lead with three runs in the seventh 9-7.
Raton however managed to get two runners on base when William Berry knocked the ball into the outfield runners scrambled and throwing errors made by West allowed all three runs to come across home plate to give Raton the 10-9 win in the bottom of the seventh.
