This fishing report, provided by Dustin Berg and Go Unlimited (supporting disabled anglers) and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
Bluewater Lake: Matthew Farmer of Albuquerque caught and released a 42-inch, 22-pound tiger muskie using a Westin Fishing Danny the Duck topwater lure on July 9.
Caballo Lake: Rebecca Calcutt of Albuquerque with her dad, Billy Calcutt, caught a 26-inch walleye using a crankbait on July 13. Cole Rogers, age 17, of Silver City caught his limit of walleye trolling crankbaits July 12 and 13. All his fish were 18 to 20.5 inches long.
Chama River below El Vado: Gary Vigil of Espanola caught a brown trout measuring 24-inches and 5.5-pounds using a black jig upriver towards the dam on July 11.
Cochiti Lake: Nathan Morgan, age 12, of Rio Rancho caught an 18-inch largemouth bass using corn on July 12. He was fishing Tetilla Peak near the boat ramp.
Conchas Lake: Michael Nee, age 12, of Edgewood caught a 20.25-inch largemouth bass using a white Gitzit on July 13.
Elephant Butte Lake: Marcos Renteria of Albuquerque caught a 4.5-pound bass using a night crawler worm off Marina Del Sur’s dock on July 13. Justin Jimmer Dominguez, age 3, of El Paso caught a 21-inch, 5-pound drum fish while bank fishing and using night crawlers on July 11.
Jemez East Fork: Hunter Baca, age 8, of Los Alamos caught his first fish, an 8-inch brown trout, using a Panther Martin on July 11.
Lake Maloya: Layla Rodriquez, age 10, of Clovis caught 3 rainbow trout measuring 19-inches, 18-inches, and 16-inches. She was using a Kastmaster and fishing on Saturday, July 13.
Liam Knight Pond: Christopher Garcia, age 5, of Albuquerque caught a catfish measuring about 18-inches long using stink bait on July 10.
Navajo Lake: Tyler Berg, age 12, of Rio Rancho, Shelby McCarthy, age 10, of Albuquerque and Ben Allen, age 10, of Albuquerque caught limits of kokanee salmon using pink and green spinners tipped with corn. The larger salmon were 16 to 17-inches and caught on July 14.
Pecos River: Anthony Ortiz, age 12, of Rio Rancho caught a 19-inch rainbow trout using a Panther Martin spinner on July 14. Luke Lebow of Corrales caught a 21-inch rainbow trout using salmon eggs on July 13.
Rio Mora: Dennis Duran of Las Vegas caught a 20.5-inch brown trout fishing the upper Mora River July 15.
Santa Rosa Lake: Estevan Flores of Albuquerque caught and released a 29-inch catfish with a 20-inch girth. He was fishing with a minnow hotdog combo on July 12.
The following reports came in late, but are definitely worth mentioning:
Caballo Lake: Justin and son Ysius Carrasco, age 8, of Las Cruces caught a couple of walleye including one that was about 19-inches. They were trolling blue Rapala shad lures during the Fourth of July weekend.
Canjilon Lakes: Savannah Samora caught an 18-inch rainbow trout using PowerBait on July 7.
Chama River below El Vado: Rick Gonzales of Albuquerque caught a 22-inch, 3.5-pound brown trout using an 1/8-ounce Panther Martin on July 2.
Eagle Nest Lake: David Schiel of Chappell Hill, Texas, caught a 37.5-inch, 15.25-pound northern pike using an orange Panther Martin tipped with PowerBait on July 7. Chantel and Eddy Lide of Bovina, Texas, caught their limit of rainbow trout all three days they went fishing (July 6-8) using bright colorful spinners tipped with PowerBait.
Elephant Butte Lake: Chase Bernal, age 17, of Los Lunas caught an approximate 3-pound largemouth bass using a weightless Zoom Fluke on July 6.
Gila River: Santiago of Las Cruces caught and released a 20-inch Gila trout using a homemade rainbow spinner with a single barbless hook on July 5.
Green Meadow Lake: Zak McPeters, age 15, of Hobbs caught an 11.5-pound catfish using cut bait fishing at night on June 8.
Greene Acres Lake: Anthony Chavez of Clovis caught an 11-pound 28-inch catfish using shrimp as bait on July 5.
Hopewell Lake: Jenna Maes of Albuquerque caught an estimated 19-inch rainbow trout fishing with a fly under a bobber on June 27. Jericho James, age 3, of Belen caught a 20-inch rainbow trout using worms over the holiday weekend July 4 and 5.
Navajo Lake: Moriya of Albuquerque caught a catfish measuring about 17-inches using nightcrawler worms on July 6.
Seven Springs Hatchery: Abram, age 6, of Albuquerque caught his first fish, a 17-inch nearly 3-pound rainbow trout on July 13.

Cabresto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday morning was 15.2 cfs. Fishing was good using woolly buggers, beetle and ant patter flies.
Clayton Lake: Fishing for walleye and trout has been slow. Fishing for catfish has been good using chicken liver as bait. The boat ramp is closed due to low water levels.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was very good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was good using minnows and small plastic baits for crappie. Fishing was good using senkos, jigs, tubes and creature baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using bottom bouncer spinner/worm rigs and minnow rigs for walleye. Jig heads with curly tail grub and minnow/worm combinations are also working well for walleye. Fishing was fair using cut bait, worms and liver for catfish.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla on Monday was 110 cfs. Fishing is fair using yellow sallies, hoppers, stimulators and small bead head mayfly nymphs.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good for trout using bright-colored spinners tipped with PowerBait. Fishing was good for perch in the mornings and evenings using a strike indicator with flies such as San Juan worms and black/tan wooly buggers. Anglers using worms were also catching fish. A few pike and kokanee salmon were caught by anglers, but reports were limited.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, spinners, worms, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Hopewell Lake: Fishing was good for trout. Large trout are reportedly being caught by anglers using worms, salmon eggs, peach PowerBait and large fly patterns such as wooly buggers and Pistol Petes.
Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, spoons, spinners and PowerBait for trout.
Los Pinos River: Fishing was good for anglers using woolly buggers and parachute adams flies.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was fair to good for trout using worms.
Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using spinners, dry flies and grasshoppers for trout.
Morphy Lake: Closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.
Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos on Monday morning was 121 cfs. Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, wooly buggers, leach pattern flies and Panther Martin spinners for trout.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 84.9 cfs. Fishing was good using Panther Martin spinners, tungsten bead head nymphs and large dry flies.Water level is reported to be high but clear.
Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge was 2,220 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species and the water level is high and murky.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Valdez was 60.2 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes.
Rio Mora: Stream flow on Monday morning was 27.1 cfs. Fishing the upper river was fair for brown trout.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Penasco was 27.5 cfs. The water level is good with good clarity. Small browns have been eager to eat flies including parachute adams, caddis and stimulators. Some stocked rainbow trout are being caught on bead head nymphs. Anglers using worms are also having success.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was fair using Super Dupers, spinners, spoons, Pistol Petes under a bubble, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Fishing is open on the Valle Vidal, including Shuree Ponds, July 1-December 31.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: Fishing with minnows and spinners was slow for all species.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing was good using nightcrawlers for bluegill. Fishing was good using ned rigs, plastic crawdads, tubes, senkos (rigged wacky) and grubs in 5 to 10 feet of water for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Good plastic bass bait colors have been natural, green, pumpkin and watermelon. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits that dive 10 to 12 feet for white bass that are beginning to school up. Fishing was fair using jigs, gulp minnows, nightcrawlers and live minnows for walleye. Fishing for catfish was good using liver and stink bait. Fishing for crappie was slow. The surface water temp was in the upper 70s.
Northwest Fishing Report
Abiquiu Lake: Fishing for walleye was fair to good using white, yellow and pink jigs. Fishing for catfish was good using worms and chicken liver fished just off of the lake bottom. Fishing for bluegill was good using worms. Anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 2,660 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing for carp was good using nightcrawlers.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was good for tiger muskie using jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and few were caught on top water lures. Fishing for catfish was fair with a few caught on chicken liver. We had no reports on other species.
Brazos River: Fishing was good using small bead head nymphs and worms for trout.
Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using spinners, Pistol Petes and PowerBait for trout.
Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 314 cfs and 381 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using night crawlers, streamers, wooly buggers, flies, Panther Martins and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. Some large brown trout up to 22-inches were caught by anglers last week. Fishing was slow below Abiquiu Dam.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing has been slow to fair for bass using nightcrawlers. Fishing was slow to fair for catfish using beef liver, homemade dough baits, worms, cut bait and stink bait.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was good for bass near the dam. On the north end of the lake, trout fishing was fair.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was slow for trout. One angler reported that there might be an algae bloom occurring that is detrimental to the fishing conditions.
Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The best bank fishing was reported to be on the lakes western edge using worms and PowerBait for trout.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez near the town of Jemez on Monday morning was 19.6 cfs. Fishing on the upper Jemez and East Fork was good using dry flies and Panther Martin spinners for rainbow and brown trout. Stimulator, hopper and black flies were working well. Mosquitos are abundant and anglers should bring bug spray.
Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lagunitas Lakes: Trout fishing was slow with only a couple fish being reported caught using small red worms.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: We had a report that fishing was slow, but a couple bass and trout are being caught.
McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow for crappie. Fishing was fair to good for bass using 3 to 4 inch natural, red and orange plastic crawdad lures on jig heads. Pike fishing was fair to good using white/yellow crankbaits, swim baits and buzz baits in 10 to 30 feet of water. Kokanee salmon fishing was good using green, pink and orange spinners tipped with corn fished 20 to 40 feet deep. Anglers reported having success using Double Whammies, Kokanee Killers and spinners.
San Gregorio Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 1,070 cfs. Trout fishing is fair to good using size 24-26 midges. Fishing below Texas Hole in the deeper runs is fair using San Juan worms, leech patterns and egg patterns. Fishing the bait waters was fair to good using night crawlers, Panther Martin spinners and Gulp eggs. Water clarity is good upriver from Texas Hole. Water clarity below Texas Hole is murky.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, a wide assortment of small flies, leach patterns, woolly buggers and Pistol Petes for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing at all ponds was fair using worms and flies for bluegill. Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southwest Fishing Report
Alumni Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing for catfish has been fair to good using worms and chicken liver.
Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was good using minnows for white bass. Fishing was good using crank baits that dive 10 to 15 feet, curly tail grubs, spoons and sassy shad for white bass and walleye. Fishing for catfish was good using minnows and chicken liver. There were no reports on other species.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing for white bass was good around Rock Canyon using live minnows. Fishing was slow to fair using nightcrawlers, chatter baits, crank baits, creature baits, jigs, topwater lures, senkos and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye and crappie was slow to fair using crank baits that dive 12 to 14 feet deep, sassy shad, and curly tail grubs. Fishing was good using cut bait, worms and chicken liver for catfish.
Escondida Lake: Anglers report fishing as slow.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 53.0 cfs. Fishing for trout is fair using spinners.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing for trout is good using PowerBait
Lake Roberts: Fishing was slow for all species.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: Fishing for trout was fair using spinners, spoons, and pink/purple/lime green PowerBait.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 1,460 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte was fair using curly tail grubs, sassy shad and minnows for walleye.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday morning was 1,400 cfs. Fishing for catfish was good using chicken liver.
Perch Lake: Fishing was fair to good for catfish using beef liver bait. Fishing for trout at night was fair using spoons.
Ruidoso River: Stream flow on Monday morning at Hollywood was 1.02 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits and curly tail grubs for bass, walleye and crappie. Fishing at night for catfish using minnows, night crawlers and hotdogs was good. Water release began July 7 and the lake level is expected to drop 8.5 feet over the next 10 days. After the release is complete catfishing in the river below the dam is expected to be good.
Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, senkos and crawdads for bass and walleye. Some anglers reported having success trolling crankbaits 10 to 20 feet deep for walleye.
