The regular season drew to a close for the Lady Tigers on Wednesday, February 20th as they hosted the Robertson Lady Cardinals in a game rescheduled after a weather postponement the day before.
Roberston has dominated every opponent this season, having lost only one contest. The varsity game saw Robertson remain undefeated in District play as the Lady Cardinals pulled out quickly and continued to dominate the floor outscoring Raton 19-6 in the first quarter. Robertson’s Darley Alianza is one of the top players in AAA, and the two-man trap defense afforded many her many steal opportunities and assists as the pressure continued to press the Lady Tigers into forced turnovers.
Second half action continued as Coach Jose Medina substituted at will, exchanging all five players through out the second half. The Raton defense took advantage of that and held the Lady Cardinals to only 10 points per quarter in the final half of the game. At the buzzer Robertson marked the win column with a 53-30 win.
Even though Raton will play Santa Fe Prep on Saturday it will only be a JV game and not a varsity game as Santa Fe Prep only has a JV team this year, their first year in girls basketball.
The JV game saw the Lady Tigers hold their own for the first four minutes of the game taking an early lead before Robertson tied the game at six with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter. Then Robertson found their groove and the hoop scoring 10 more points to end the first quarter. The rest of the game saw Robertson put the pressure to Raton and extend their lead into halftime.
Second half action continued the same way ending the third period of play at 48-12. Raton would only muster another five points to end the game 60-17.
