Tigers Win Two Lady Tigers Split With Santa Fe Indian

It was one of those great afternoons for sports in Raton as the Tigers took on the Pecos Panthers and at the other end of the street the Lady Tigers hosted the Santa Fe Indian School Lady Braves who are considered one of the better teams in class 4A softball.

The boys started off first at 12 noon and won the first game 10-5 with Cole Medina credited with the win going six innings with nine strikeouts and one walk. William Holland came in to finish off the game for Raton with one walk and two strikeouts. Mike Valencia went the distance for Pecos with four strikeouts and three walks. Raton started the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Matthew Quartieri was credited with a home run in the game.

In game two it was Pecos who scored first with one run in the second followed by three Raton runs in the second and five runs in the third. Richie Gonzales gets the win going six innings with six strikeouts and five walks. Dante Romero finished the game with two strikeouts and one walk. Marios Archuleta took the loss for Pecos going five innings with seven strikeouts and only two walks. Juan Varela finished the game for Pecos with one walk and no strikeouts.

Raton took game two with a 11-2 score which adds two more marks to the district win column leaving Raton at 11-1 in district play. First Round of state tourney play will be May 2.

 

The Lady Tigers took the field at 1:00 p.m. Saturday and took the early lead as Camryn Mileta and Andie Ortega rounded the bases to put two runs on the board. Raton would hold SFI scoreless until the third inning when they pushed Destiny Montoya around the bases for a 1-2 score. Raton then scored another run in the third and pushed three more runs across the plate in the fourth for a 2-6 score. As the game wore on SFI would score one in the sixth and another two in the seventh to make it a 5-6 win for Raton. Crystal Ortiz took the win with one strikeout and one walk while Ariana Trujillo was credited with the loss, she had five strikeouts and four walks.

In game two Santa Fe Indian came out with bats a blazing scoring five runs in the first and another three in the second holding Raton scoreless and shocked with an 8-0 score. Then the rain came and it seemed to wash the shock away as Raton put three players around the bases and would leave the inning with an 8-3 score. Raton put three more around the bases in the fifth making it an 8-6 game. Now within reach Raton held SFI scoreless until the seventh when SFI put two more runs on the board and ended the game with a tough defense. Final on the game was 10-8. Crystal Ortiz took the loss with again only one strikeout and four walks while Alexis Garcia took the win with five strikeouts and five walks.

The Lady Tigers play McCurdy on Monday for the final district game of the season. Raton currently holds an 8-0 district record and will look at a state playoff seating later this week.
