Roy/Mosquero Girls and Cimarron Boys Advance to Semis for Class A NM State Basketball Championship

The #3 seed Cimarron Rams faced a familiar foe in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Boys Class A NM State Basketball Tournament in #6 Roy/Mosquero.  The District 5A opponents met for the fourth time this season and the Rams withstood a third quarter flurry in which Roy/Mq closed to within two, but the Rams were 4 of 7 from beyond the arc in the final quarter while Roy/Mq was 0 for 7 and Cimarron propelled themselves into the semis with a 68 – 39 victory.

In the girls bracket, the Roy/Mosqero ladies were also the #3 seed, but had a tougher time against #6 Quemado.  Trailing for most of the game, Lady Blue just kept getting the rebounds against the taller Lady Eagles and came from nine points down in the final quarter to post an impressive 59 – 55 win.

Lady Blue was down 29 – 23 at the half and even though Coach Blair Clavel had only six suited up and four of them played the entire 32 minutes including Constanza Covarrubius and Tayla Profitt who both contributed 19 to the winning cause with Covarrubias hitting 5 of the teams 6 three-pointers. Reagan Doherty was also in double figures with 11, Dylan Clavel scored 8 and Brooke Hazen had 2. Lady Blue capitalized on turnovers by converting 27 points from Eagle’s miscues.

Cimarron boys were up by nine at the half and then Roy/Mq tried to put a run together, but as soon as they got close the Rams had an answer and the answer was Uriah Martinez. The senior had 35 points including 8 three- pointers and was 9 of 10 from the line.  Andrew Gonzales had 11, Orion Ledoux with 8, Logan Sahd with 7, Zayden Martinez with 5 and Rickie Aguilar with  2.

Roy/Mosquero boys were led by Ike Smith with 12, Thomas Deherrera with 10, Ethan Hazen had 8; Rhett Smith with 6, Brigz Bell with 2 and Grant Fudge had 1.

Cimarron’s semifinal opponent will be #2 Fort Sumner/House to be played at 3 pm at RREC on Thursday.

The girls semis will have Roy/Mosquero taking on Cliff as the Cowgirls outlasted the Des Moines Lady Demons 44 – 38. The girls semi final will be at 11:30 am at Rio Rancho Events Center on Thusday, March 12.
