Scottie King Miller, Sr., age 92, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas surrounded by his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many, Scottie lived a life rooted in service, family, and quiet strength.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the Amistad Church in Amistad, New Mexico. Burial will follow in the Amistad Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton, New Mexico.
Born on February 14, 1933, in Skelly town, Texas, Scottie was the son of William Idus “Jack” Miller and Goldie Odell Dodd Miller. He spent his early years in New Mexico, attending Amistad School through the 11th grade before graduating from Clayton High School in 1951. His formative years were shaped by a strong work ethic and deep familial bonds—qualities that would define his life.
In the mid-1950s, Scottie answered the call to serve his country. He spent two and a half years stateside as a cook in the U.S. Army and then served for eighteen months in Germany as a radioman. His time in the military reflected his steadfast dedication to duty and responsibility.
Following his service, Scottie returned home to Amistad, New Mexico. After marrying in 1963, he settled in Nara Visa and began a long and respected career with the New Mexico Highway Department. Over 25 years of service culminated in his retirement as a supervisor. During this time, he also served his community as a member of the Nara Visa Volunteer Fire Department, holding the role of fire chief for many years. His commitment to public service was unwavering and deeply appreciated by those around him.
Scottie married the love of his life, Mary Evelyn Veith Miller, with whom he shared 62 beautiful years. Together they built a life centered on family and hard work. After retiring from the highway department, Scottie and Mary Evelyn continued working side by side on their family ranch—raising cattle and grandchildren with equal care and devotion.
He was a man who found joy in simple pleasures: arrowhead hunting across the plains of New Mexico, playing cards and dominos with friends and family, reading Western novels by Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey, tending to his yard and garden with pride, and caring for the neighborhood cats with gentle affection. His grandchildren remember fondly the times he took them out to feed cows—a cherished ritual that brought him immense happiness.
Scottie’s generosity extended beyond his immediate family. After the passing of his father, he helped support his mother on the ranch and sent money home to assist with daily expenses. He also played an instrumental role in helping finance his youngest sisters’ college educations—an act that spoke volumes about his selflessness and enduring support for those he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Idus “Jack” Miller and Goldie Odell Dodd Miller; siblings Virginia Faust, Nina Cleveland, Sidney Miller, Tressie Taylor, Betty Leach, Tula Williams, and William Orville “Chick” Miller.
