It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Anthony Gutierrez on June 22, 2026, at his residence in Trinidad, Colorado, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 87 years old at the time of his passing and was surrounded by his loving family.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years Marie Elaine Gutierrez and his two sons Jesse Leonard Gutierrez and Troy Anthony Gutierrez.
He is survived by his daughters Vanessa Gutierrez, Lorelei (Herman) Lucero and Kimberly (Keith) Segura. Sister Connie Mattorano and sister-in-law who was like a daughter to him Mary P. Trujillo.
He was also survived by his grandchildren, Diana Lee Gutierrez, Joseph (Gabbie) Gutierrez, Tiffany (Jake) Gutierrez, Matthew (Desi) Gutierrez, Felicia Mattorano, Aaron Mattorano, Brandon (Janell) Segura, Tea (Michael) Gutierrez, and Jesse Gutierrez Jr.
He also had many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
Leonard worked as a coal Miner for almost 30 years at the Allen Mine and was a member of the UMWA until he retired in 1994. He also worked as a carpenter throughout his life, and he and his brothers built and remodeled many homes in Trinidad and the surrounding areas. He decided to come out of retirement and worked for Flogistix for 8 years.
Leonard found immense satisfaction in the presence of loved ones, and his sociable nature made him a sought-after companion at gatherings. He was renowned for his quick wit and ability to inject humor into any situation with unpredictable comments.
Leonard’s hobbies included fishing and hunting, and gambling at Cripple Creek, which he visited frequently. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
Services will be held for both Marie and Leonard Gutierrez at the Comi Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, July 3, 2026. The Rosary will be at 12:30pm and the funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m.
