Travis ‘Hal’ Earls passed away peacefully at his home in Trinidad on Friday, June 26. He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Parker and his son Charles Ross. He is survived by a sister, Lavonne Blanton, daughters Denise Mirat and Sandra Meeks, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Born on October 6, 1940, Hal worked in construction in South Carolina and Texas before moving to Colorado in 1971. The family settled in Sarcillo Canyon, where Hal lived until failing health and the need for dialysis forced him to move to town in 2021.
Beginning in 1976, Hal added on to the trailer the family had moved from Texas, slowly creating a beautiful house of which he and his wife Dorothy were very proud. Hal did most of the work himself.
Hal was the deputy superintendent of the Trinidad dam project in the early 70’s. When the dam was completed, he worked for other contractors in the Trinidad and Colorado Springs areas and in Cripple Creek. In 1986, Hal set up his own company, ‘Hal Earls Construction’. He built roads and dams, helped fight wildfires and laid pipe in Kim, Branson, northern New Mexico and the Weston and Stonewall areas, making many good friends along the way.
Hal took good care of his wife Dorothy until she passed away in 2009. Dorothy’s ashes were scattered in Laurencito Canyon, but Hal expressed a wish to be buried in the cemetery near Segundo, so that people would have a place to go to remember him. He was a good, honest and faithful man who will be much missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Lord’s Chapel in Segundo on Friday, July 10 at 2:00 pm.
