Born on August 30, 1951, in Collin County, Texas, Connie was a proud Texan at heart. She spent much of her life in Amarillo, where she developed the strong spirit, warm hospitality, and fierce love for family that would define her throughout her life. Though her roots ran deep in Texas soil, Connie planted lasting seeds in the community of Raton after relocating here in 1974. Upon arriving, she worked as a waitress at Reno’s Diner, quickly becoming known for her friendly smile and caring nature. While raising three children, she pursued a dream that would become one of the greatest accomplishments of her life. Through determination, perseverance, and countless sacrifices, she earned her nursing degree in 1983.
Connie was immensely proud of her nursing career and the opportunity it gave her to care for others. She began her work at Miners Long Term Care, later serving the community through positions at Miners General Hospital, the Springer Boys School, and ultimately the New Mexico Department of Health, where she finished her career before retirement. Nursing was more than a profession to Connie. It was a calling. She cared for her patients with compassion, dignity, and genuine concern, touching countless lives throughout her years of service.
Above all else, Connie loved her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She cherished family gatherings, celebrated every milestone with enthusiasm, and never missed an opportunity to create lasting memories with those she loved. She also found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: traveling, competing in spirited games of Scrabble, tending to her flower gardens, and trying her luck at the casino. Christmas held a special place in her heart, and each year she delighted in decorating her home on Apache Avenue, where her festive displays brought joy not only to her family but also to countless members of the community who admired the lights while visiting Raton’s City of Bethlehem.
Connie was preceded in death by her mother, Roberta Turner; her father, Doland Wheeler; her sisters, Evelyn Carter and Judy Wheeler; her brother, Dennis Wheeler; and her faithful dog and longtime companion, Muffin, who brought her comfort and companionship over many cherished years.
She leaves behind a family who will forever treasure her love and example, including her daughter, Sherry Lester; her son, Larry Lester and his wife, Jaina; and her daughter, Kimberly Madrid and her husband, Michael.
She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Shealynn Kenney; Chris Kenney; Madison Adams and her husband, Connor; Nicole Gutierrez and her husband, Anthony; and Jacob Madrid. Her legacy continues through her precious great-grandchildren, Elijah Kenney and Cameron Gutierrez. Each of her children and grandchildren brought immeasurable joy to her life.
Connie is also survived by her dear friend, Margaret Alarid, whose friendship and kindness blessed Connie’s life in countless ways over the years.
Though she will be deeply missed every day, her family takes peace in knowing that this farewell is not forever and that one glorious day they will be together again.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, support, and acts of kindness during this difficult time.
