John served in the U.S. Army from October 12, 1959, to January 12, 1961, where he received an Honorable Discharge. He then served in the reserves until January 31, 1965. John took his Basic Training at Fort Riley, received his Medic Training at Fort Sam Houston, and further training at Fort Chaffee. He was then sent to Nice France where he served as a Medic. His journey to and from France took eight days each way by ship. Upon his return, he worked for Gold Cross Ambulance in Albuquerque.

Following his Tour in the Army, he came back to Clayton and met the Love of his Life Maria Carmel Sisneros. They married on November 30, 1963, in St. Frances Xavier Church in Clayton, New Mexico, and celebrated 58 years. They made their home in Dalhart, Texas. He worked for Ford garage for 14 years. He then went on to Rita Blanca Electric where he retired after 30 years.

He would often plan impromptu fishing trips with Michael when he was younger. As Michael grew older, he began planning road trips that often involved fishing. After Michael moved away, Travis would pick dad up and make sure he still got to fish even as his Parkinson’s progressed.

John’s granddaughters were the joy of life. When Johnna was a baby, he would get down on his hands and knees and teach her to crawl. As she grew older, he attended all her Special Olympic Activities. He never missed a basketball game, volleyball game, track meets 4-H, or Ag event for Taysha and Tricia. He was always in the stands cheering them on and would always be the first to show up.
