BioBlitz at Capulin Volcano National Monument

July 30, 2016

Capulin Volcano National Monument will be partnering with several organizations on Saturday, July 30th to inventory all the species of wildlife present on the volcano. The event will feature hikes, talks and even stargazing from dusk until after dark. The public is invited to come out and help catalog the wonderful diversity of flora and fauna on Capulin Volcano. Entomologists from Oklahoma State University, an ethno-botanist from the Jicarilla Apache tribe, a ranger from New Mexico State Parks, ornithologists and botanists from different national parks will be on hand to lead discussions and hikes.

The first event will be a bird-watching hike beginning at 6 AM. Hummingbird banding will be ongoing through the morning, from 7 AM to 9 AM. A hands-on insect display with various bugs will be set up near the Visitor Center for the morning and will remain open until temperatures reach 85 degrees. A plant identification hike will be held mid-morning and again in the early afternoon (times to be determined). A second bird-watching hike will take place from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Stargazing and a ranger-led Milky Way talk will be held concurrently once the sun sets at 8 PM.

Small squeeze toys (in the shape of a bison or a ladybug) will be given to the first 200 visitors to show up. All events will be free to the public, but the usual fee for driving to the top of the mountain will apply.

Partners for this event include Oklahoma State University, New Mexico State Parks, the Jicarilla Apache and the Western National Parks Association.
