The Cowbell Tourney moved to Raton for the winning side of the bracket Friday night and a full slate of ball games starting at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning where the Raton JV girls took to the court against the Raton varsity girls.
The first game of the afternoon Friday saw a close game between Roy/Mosquero and Springer girls. The game stayed close with the Lady Blue trailing at halftime by five. It was the third quarter that made the big difference when the Lady Blue outscored Springer 17-2. The fourth quarter brought the Lady Red Devils back but left them just short with a 48-45 final to send the Lady Blue on to the championship game on Saturday. Tayla Proffitt dropped in 24 points during the game to take Roy/Mosquero to the win.
The Boys from Roy/Mosquero and Springer took the hardwood where the Blue held Springer to single digits in the first half and going into the locker room with a 29-8 lead. They finished the game with a 48-34 score sending Roy/Mosquero on to the championship game.
Game 15 was the game of the evening between Clayton and Des Moines that saw several lead changes and a tie score at 39 with 2:44 left in the final quarter of play. When the dust cleared and the final buzzer sounded to end the game with the YellowJackettes one point up over the Lady Demons 43-42. The game, especially in the third and fourth quarters was a battle at the free throw line as Des Moines went to the line 28 times and only sunk 11 of those shots. Clayton’s Jazmyn Wilson dropped in seven of eight Celina Sandoval added two while Joslyn Kimble missed her two shots.
The final game of the evening brought Cimarron to battle Clayton. Clayton seemed to faulter falling behind Cimarron as they double digit scored with 20 and 21 points in the third and fourth quarters. Urijah Martinez led the Rams in scoring with 33 points with nine of 11 free throws followed by Logan Sahd and Andrew Gonzales with 18 each. Cimarron marked the win column with a 77-51 final.
Raton teams began the day Saturday with the Raton varsity girls playing Raton JV girls where the varsity held the JV to only 11 points with Aveah Marquez topping the scoring with 13 including two of two free throws. Final for this game was 41-11.
The Raton boys hosted the Springer Boys JV team holding them to only 17 points in the game. Aiden Riley bested the Raton scoring with 14 including three of four free throws. Logan Elliott followed with 13 including three of four free throws for a final 66-17 win.
For the consolation game the Lady Rams took on the Lady Bears where the Lady Rams held Maxwell scoreless in the first quarter and to seven in the second. At the final buzzer the Lady Rams took the win 55-22. Cimarron’s Abigail Martinez and Maggie Wier both scored 12 points in the game.
Des Moines Demons caged the Maxwell Bears for the boy’s consolation win 65-40 where Des Moines dominated the first quarter with a 21-8 score. Des Moines 6’2” senior Destry Sumpter was a force to be reckoned with both on the boards and shooting where he scored 14. The Demons spread out the scoring with Anthony Casarez dropping in four 3-pointers Followed by Beau Cruz with 11. Maxwell’s Paul Gonzales also popped the net with four 3-pointers.
The 3/4 place game brought the Springer Lady Red Devils up against the Lady Demons from Des Moines for another close game. The Lady Demons stayed close but just couldn’t get the scoring to fall to catch up with Springer. Part of the Lady Demon frustration came from the charity stripe where they went 15 of 31 free throws. Des Moines’ Rylan Brown contributed 12 points to the effort with Holly Ward adding 10. Springer’s Brenna Duran scored 13 with Olivia Burton adding in 10. The final score marked the win column for Springer with a 59-51 final.
Clayton and Springer boys pounded the hardwood for the boy’s 3/4 place game where Springer took a big 24-point lead in the first half. Clayton woke up in the third and came back to within three before falling back to 54-47 score. Both teams were pretty even in the fourth, but Springer pulled it out for a 69-63 win for the third-place trophy. The comeback came in part from Brody Oulette who was scoreless in the first half but added 13 in the second half. Christopher Herrera topped with 18 points including three of three free throws. Adrian Quintana added 13 for Clayton. Springer’s Xavier Armijo adds 18 but went cold at the free throws missing four of four. Jason Montoya added 15 and Pablo Romero dropped in 20 with nine of 10 free throws.
The girl’s championship game was a rough and tumble game that eventually saw two Lady Blue foul out along with two Clayton players fouling out as well. Many of both teams’ players had four fouls on the evening too. With so many fouls the girls went to the line often with Clayton making 12 of 30 attempts and Roy/Mosquero making 28 of 42 attempts. Clayton’s Jaz Wilson popped 16 points but went five of 10 free throws with Keelan Ballard adding 12 points and three of six at the line. Celina Sandoval added 11 but only did three of 10 free throws. On the Lady Blue side of the scorebook Tayla Proffitt totaled 23 points including 11 of 15 free throws. Constantza Covarrubias scored 16 including eight of 10 free throws. At the final buzzer Roy/Mosquero scraped by the YellowJackettes 55-48.
The boy’s championship game was a more mellow game with Cimarron taking the lead and never looking back. It was the second and third quarters that won the game for Cimarron as they outscored the Blue boys 23-10 in the second and 20-7 in the third. Cimarron was led by Urijah Martinez with 22 including five of five free throws followed by Andrew Gonzales with 20 of which 18 came from 3-point territory. Logan Sahd added 15 to the total. The boys in Blue spread out their scoring pretty evenly with no player getting into double digits in the game. The Cimarron Rams took the Cowbell home with a 65-45 win.
