In Loving Memory of Rick J. Kumm

Obituary: Rick J. Kumm (1957-2024)

Rick J. Kumm, 67, of Cokedale, Colorado, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service and love for his community.

Rick’s journey began in 1957 when he was born in Buffalo, New York, to the union of Lloyd M. Kumm and Francis Steinberger. In 1975 he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he was a highly respected explosives detection dog handler assigned to Air Force One, serving under President Ronald Reagan. His commitment to duty and excellence was evident throughout his career.

Following his military service, Rick continued to serve his community as a vital member of the Colorado Port of Entry in Trinidad. His passion for helping others was further demonstrated through his foundational role in establishing the Cokedale Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Chief. He was also an EMT-B with the Las Animas County QRT Program, embodying a spirit of selflessness and dedication.

Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Kathy; his children, Dr. James M. Kumm (Carol) and Sergeant Jeffrey L. Kumm; and his cherished grandchildren, Madison and Thomas. He also leaves behind his Service Dog Taranis, his sister, Kelly Hinrichs (Paul), along with several nieces and nephews, all of whom will deeply miss his guidance and warmth. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister Kim Beltron.

Rick’s legacy is defined by his unwavering commitment to serving others, both in uniform and in his personal life. His contributions to his community and his family will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Judes Children’s Hospital, The Wounded Warrior Project, or a charity of choice honoring Rick’s lifelong dedication to service.
