In Loving Memory of Lita Bernal

Lita Bernal, age 66, passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2026.

As a freshman in high school, Lita knew she wanted to join the United States Air Force and upon graduation from Raton High School in 1978, she enlisted and proudly served 20 years retiring as an OSI Agent in 1999. She returned home to Raton and after various jobs, she started her second career as an inspector for the NM State Fire Marshal’s Office. Everyone knew when that red vehicle pulled up, their paperwork better be in order. She wasn’t trying to be difficult; her main concern was public safety. During this time, Lita took on-line courses and earned her Bachelor and Master of Business of Administration degrees. After 17 years with the Fire Marshal’s office, Lita retired followed by a short three-year stint as the Director of the School of Business for Luna Community College.

In her retirement, Lita enjoyed cross stitching, she took great pride in tending to her lawn and yard, and helped friends, family, neighbors and community in any way she could. Lita was a volunteer for the Raton Humane Society for many years and most recently volunteered at the Tourist Information Center.

Lita is preceded in death by her parents, Gabino (Gabe) and Guadalupe (Lupe) Bernal. She is survived by her brother, Levi Ortiz (Annie Vigil) niece, Sarah Ortiz and long-time friend, Donna Klassen.

Services are pending and will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements for Lita Bernal are under the direction of the Alderette Pomeroy Funeral Home.
