Walter “Wally” Louis Chaves, 81, of Raton, New Mexico, went to meet the lord on March 14, 2026, in Greeley, Colorado. He was born on August 23, 1944, in Hilo, Hawaii, to parents Walter Chaves and Hilda (Cadinha) Chaves.
Wally was a hard-working man who loved the ranching life. After graduating from Colorado State University, he began his career with the NM livestock board, after 25 years as a meat inspector he retired and then purchased a ranch in the Kiowa Valley east of Raton and ranched another 22 years. He was a proud member of the NRA and enjoyed the sport of Rodeo. He competed in roping, as well as the riding events in his younger years.
Wally loved his animals, especially his dogs and horses. He was known for his joke telling and always had a prank to pull on his friends. He enjoyed the fall gatherings and the spring brandings. His big smile will be missed.
He is survived by his children Danny Chaves and his wife Sheryl, Janice Maggard and her husband Phil Maggard and Shane Burris. He was blessed with eight grandchildren; Zack Costopoulos, Mason Maggard, Zach Smith, Dondi Smith, Jordan Smith, Tanner Smith, Paisley Smith and Kensley Burris.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Chaves and Hilda (Cadinha) Chaves, and his brother Nolan Chaves.
