Raton Fire and Emergency Services and Colfax Rapid Response responded to a vehicle fire at about 2:32 p.m. at the top of Raton Pass Wednesday afternoon on the northbound side closing the northbound lanes of I-25 for several hours Wednesday afternoon.

Upon arrival units found a semi-truck and SUV fully involved with fuel leaking from the fuel tank on the semi. The fuel that leaked out of the semi caught fire as it drained down the gutter by the barrier on the east side of the roadway. Also involved in the accident was a wide load semi carrying a very large steel drag line bucket. The rear escort vehicle for the wide load was the SUV that was involved in the accident and fire.

According to State Police the wide load truck and escort vehicle were parked on the east side of the roadway when another northbound semi truck experienced mechanical issues and struck the wide load truck in the rear of the trailer and escort vehicle parked next to the rear end of the wide load trailer.

Raton Ambulance transported four individuals, two with serious injures and two with moderate injuries to MCMC according to Fire Chief Anthony Burk. Raton Fire cleared the scene at 5:26 p.m. with cleanup of the scene being conducted by NMDOT. New Mexico State Police are investigating the incident and we will update the story when we have more information.
