FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
— October 1, 2025 — The New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division (ORD) of the Department of Economic Development announced the allocation of $2,178,029 through its Outdoor Equity Fund to 61 innovative programs across the state, including $39,700 for the new Raton Outdoor Equity Program.
The Raton Outdoor Equity Program will relaunch outdoor recreation programs for youth, providing free outdoor recreation access and activities to over 200 underserved youth and families in northeastern New Mexico. Through a new outdoor equipment lending program and seasonal youth-oriented recreational programming for biking, kayaking, disc golf, geocaching, and guided nature hikes—the program will reduce financial and geographic barriers to outdoor recreational participation. By fostering physical activity, environmental awareness, and community connection, this initiative will help revitalize outdoor culture in Raton.
The first round of funding for FY26 saw 140 applications requesting a total of $4.9 million, demonstrating the strong demand for outdoor recreation and educational opportunities in New Mexico. These programs aim to provide outdoor education and career training to more than 22,000 youth, with a special focus on serving low-income families and Tribal communities. The grants support a wide range of local initiatives, including those by the City of Raton Recreation Department, “This record funding round reflects our commitment to ensuring all New Mexico youth have access to the benefits of outdoor recreation and education,” said Karina Armijo, ORD Director. We are proud to support programs that promote health, environmental stewardship, and career pathways, especially for underserved communities.”
The Outdoor Equity Fund is part of the state’s broader effort to expand outdoor opportunities and foster healthy communities through accessible outdoor experiences.
