Raton Fire and Rescue didn’t have to travel far to the scene of a noon-time explosion and fire as the incident occured just a little over 100 yards west of Raton Fire Station #2 on West Troy at about 12:15 pm on Thursday, Oct. 2. The trailer was completely destroyed and was unoccupied at the time of the explosion and there were no reported injuries. Utilities had been shut off to the address prior to the incident and, according to neighbors, the structure had been empty for some time.
Raton Fire and Rescue and Colfax Rapid Reponse # 8 were on the scene quickly and the flames were extingued within 45 minutes, but firefighters stayed on the scene for most of the afternoon for mop-up as the State Fire Marshall’s office was on scene trying to determine the cause of the explosion.
