Raton School Board Moves Meetings and Approves Forms

Raton School Board members met Monday August 18, 2025, for their monthly regular meeting one week after the start of the school year here in Raton where they heard about graduation requirements, capital projects and the new building use form.

Addison Medina, RHS Student Senate President informed the board of the Homecoming schedule  as follows.

Sports fans will need to purchase tickets at Go Fan for all the fall sports. Show your phone at the gate with ticket purchase on Go Fan to gain access into the field or gym. Season passes are available and can be purchased through Go Fan as well. There will be limited cash sales, using Go Fan will reduce the exposure with cash.

All schools in New Mexico will be going through an accreditation program this year this will include board members as part of the program. The state will also be moving away from Parent Square to Synergy which Superintendent Kristi Medina noted would be less expensive and the state will cover the costs for schools.

Capital improvements report included the update on the new school square footage for a PK-12 campus. If approved at the PSCOC meeting on August 27, the new school building will have 133,401 gross square footage. With the approval of the new size the design and building of the new school can begin.

The new gym doors installation is progressing with a proposed completion date of August 29, 2025. The last items to be completed is the key card access to the gym.

The gym use form is just about ready and includes the possible following cost for building use. These fees are comparable to other school districts in the area. The parking lot use fee is for events that are held only on the parking lot and is not added to the gym use fee. If you rent the gym, it is only the $400 fee including the parking lot.

Board members approved the new board meeting schedule per the open meetings act. The board agreed to move the board meetings to the third Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. making the September meeting to be held on September 18, 2025. Mondays presented to many conflicts for the current board members so Thursday was chosen.

Board members approved the FY26 travel reimbursement form for staff and administration. The fees follow the Department of Finance fee schedules.

Pettigrew and Associates provided the board with a proposal for boundary and topography survey in the amount of $61,285.78 while Precision/DJ&A submitted a proposal for $71,553. The scope of the work will include using ground penetrating radar to locate utilities, a boundary survey plat and a topographical survey. Ryan Lutz with Capital AE recommended the use of Pettigrew for the project which the board agreed and accepted their proposal. Work should begin by the end of the month.

The board moved through the policy advisories and approved the final reads and second reads. The board disapproved the state cellphone policy in favor of the one the district put in place at the last special meeting. All first read policies are approved to be moved forward.
