Announcing The BioBlitz at Capulin Volcano!
Capulin, New Mexico – On Saturday, July 14, Capulin Volcano National Monument will be hosting fun and exciting interactive events to showcase the various species of plant and wildlife present at the volcano. This event will feature ranger led hikes, talks, and an up close experience with the park’s native pollinators.
Entomologists from Oklahoma State University will present live bugs for visitors to observe as part of the Insect Adventure experience. Programs will include an edible bug station, where courageous participants have the opportunity to win a prize. Visitors can get hands on and assist rangers with Capulin’s Hummingbird banding project. The park will provide a telescope for visitors to enjoy solar viewing. Visitors can register to join rangers on walks discussing the plant and bird species of the volcano. Capulin Volcano’s very own mascot Buzz the Hummingbird will be making special appearances throughout the day. Registration will open at 5:30 a.m. at the visitor center, with programs beginning at 6:00 a.m. and lasting until 7:00 p.m.
There is no cost for this event, and all programs will be free to the public. However, the park entrance fee of $15 per vehicle for driving to the top of the volcano will apply.
