The first round of state basketball playoffs began this weekend with the undefeated number 1 seed Roy/Mosquero Lady Blue hosting the 16 seed Dora Lady Coyotes in Roy Friday evening March 7, 2025.
The Lady Blue come into the state playoffs sporting a District 5A record of 10-0 and 27-0 overall. The Dora Lady Coyotes bring a 5-5 record in District 4A play with a 13-14 overall record for the season.
The Lady Blue controlled the jump ball but Dora’s Karen Inge scored the first two points but no long after that Sophia DeHerrera put the Lady Blue on the scoreboard. From there the Lady Blue took the lead and never let the Lady Coyotes tie the game again. By the halftime buzzer it was a 24-15 lead for Roy/Mosquero. Dora made the girls earn those points as the Lady Coyotes played an aggressive man to man defense while the Lady Blue kept the Dora ball out of the basket with several blocked shots.
The second half of play saw the Lady Coyotes go cold scoring only nine points in the second half of play to the Lady Blue’s 39 points. It was Constantza Covarrubias who came off the bench and plopped in three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to add to the 22 points the Lady Blue put in. As the final buzzer sounded it was a running clock and a final score of 63-24.
The Lady Blue will advance to the second round of state tournament play against none other than the Springer Lady Red Devils who defeated the Des Moines Lady Demons 66-64 in an exciting nail biter playoff game Friday evening in Des Moines. The two teams will meet on Wednesday March 12 at 3:00 p.m. in the Bernallilo High School gym.
