Despite the bad weather Raton hosted Clayton Thursday January 30, 2025 for all four teams third district game of the season with all teams being fairly matched.

The JV boys took to the court first and what a match up it was with both teams showing good defense and finishing the first quarter tied at nine. Raton held Clayton int eh second quarter to only five while scoring 10 and then flipped the third quarter with Clayton leading the game. At the buzzer Clayton was up by three 38-35.

Both Girls varsity teams come into the game with a 0-2 record in district play while Raton held a 4-12 overall record and Clayton with a 5-12 in overall play. The first quarter started a bit slow as the defenses held strong and kept scoring down until late in the quarter. Raton did have the lead 8-6 at the end of the first and fell behind in the second going into the locker room with a 15-12 score. Clayton came alive in the third quarter outscoring Raton 15-3 and extended that lead in the fourth 11-4 for a final 41-18.

The boys varsity game was another close one with Raton taking the lead and at one point was up by 12 but simply couldn’t hold on as Clayton would battle back from 10 point deficits a couple of times in the the game and at one point in the third actually had the lead for a short time. Raton lead the first half of the game going into the locker room at half time with a 35-26 lead. There were times in the game where Raton struggled making long passes down court that were easily intercepted or tipped away for the turnover with many resulting in Clayton points. Raton was strong at the free throw line doing 84% from the charity stripe but Clayton could have turned the game around had they hit more free throws. Clayton could only manage 56% of their 30 attempts at the line. The fourth quarter saw lots of timeouts as coaches strategized for the win. In the final seconds of the game it was only a two point lead by Raton and had Clayton not missed free throws it could have gone the other way.
