It was the fifth time this season that these two teams met and what a game they brought to the Des Moines gym Saturday night as the Demons hosted the Cimarron Rams for the District 5 1A championship game.
The last time these two teams met Des Moines won the game by five and were out to make up for the previous four losses and what a game they made it trying to best the Demons especially on their home turf. As the game got under way it was back and forth with both teams playing a defensive game and holding the score even most of the quarter and ending it in a tie at 13.
The second quarter Cimarron proved they could out make a go of it as they outscored Des Moines by 10 to take the lead into the locker room at halftime. With four wins under their belts the Demons were not ready to give up and they countered the second quarter with a 21-11 run and tied the game at 45.
With a tired start both teams knew it would be a battle to the finish and a battle it was with both teams going to the free throw line and making or breaking the game. Des Moines scored only six out of 12 at the line while Cimarron did five of eight attempts. Another game that could have went either way from the charity stripe. Both teams pressed knowing that they had to steal the ball and make the basket. However the task was a bit more difficult with top players Caleb Sumpter and Nash Trujillo in foul trouble while Andrew Gonzalez fouled out for Cimarron. When the final buzzer sounded after a couple of ties late in the quarter Des Moines bested Cimarron by only three points 60-57.
