As the snowy morning skies began to lightened up, one could wonder if the Lady Tigers would have a ball game this afternoon as Thursday February 9th’s game was already a makeup game with the St Mikes Lady Horseman after weather canceled the first game in January. Not only did the game go on but it was moved up to a 4:00 p.m. start time in Tiger Gym.
The JV girls started out with a run taking the lead at one point but then the second and third quarters left spectators shaking their heads as St Mikes held Raton scoreless in the second and only gave up two points in the third with both of those at the free throw line. Raton simply struggled with several turnovers and missed shots. The fourth quarter wasn’t much better with only five points marking the scoreboard for Raton. At the buzzer St Mikes marked the win column with a 44-17 score.
From the jump ball to the end of the first quarter it was all St Mikes as Raton fell scoreless while the Lady Horsemen dropped in 12. In the second quarter a spark struck and saw Raton battle back and hold St Mikes to only four points while Raton went three of four at the line and added three field goals to go into the locker room at halftime down by only six.
The girls came back on the court and suffered the same second half curse that has plagued the boys in the last few games where turnovers and missed shots in the second half have allowed the opponent to add double digit points and extend their leads by a big margin. St Mikes held Raton to single digit scoring in the half while they did 18 and 22 to create a 30 point lead and the win.
