Important Message from Raton Humane Society about Supporting SENATE BILL 57

FROM SPAY/NEUTER COALITION OF NM (sorry about the fine print, but great information):

I’m hearing a lot of misinformation going around on this bill. Here is what we know:

Dog food costs could go up $1.13 to $2.26 per dog/cat per year, though not all companies will pass the fee on to the consumer. This only applies to pet food companies that bring in 3 million or more, so many of the small boutique brands will not be affected. This is already done and has worked well in several states. This will give NM $1.26 million dollars to provide 16,000 to 22,000 desperately needed low cost spays and neuters in our state.

There are many small nonprofits who work our butts off to provide low cost spay/neuter, but we can only do so much on donations, fundraisers, and small grants. Small nonprofits shouldn’t be the only ones to tackle this problem. This is on all of us to make a change.

We’re already spending $51 million in taxpayer money to house, feed, transfer and euthanize unwanted cats and dogs. So, in reality, we’re paying for irresponsible breeders and owners to continue making beer money off puppies, or we’re putting owners who want the help in a position to give their pets up, let them loose as strays, or let their dogs or cats multiply. This is our fault as a community. We need to respectfully educate our friends and neighbors; a trip to the shelter is always helpful. Every single one of us can do something…and right now, we can call or email our legislators before Friday (1/31) to show our support for this important bill. If you need help finding your legislators, please message the page with your address and we’ll find them for you.

*Thank you to Animal Protection New Mexico and Animal Protection Voters NM for the research and information provided in the pictures. *

CALL SENATOR CAMPOS (505) 986-4311 AND REPRESENTATIVE CHATFIELD (505) 986-4467 TODAY AND ASK THEM TO SUPPORT SENATE BILL 57. P L E A S E . DO IT TODAY.

New Mexico spends $25 per person per year to euthanize ONE OUT OF FIVE of our unwanted pets and transfer about 33,000 to other states to deal with our problem! See our www.spayneuternm.org for more info.
