Raton Takes Two in Double Header with Santa Fe Prep

By Marty Mayfield

KRTN Multi-Media

While the day started out cold and gloomy it was nothing near that for the Raton Tiger baseball team as they posted 10 runs in the first inning of game one of a double header with Santa Fe Prep Saturday morning at Gabrielle Field in Raton.

The Blue Griffins opened the scoring as they put a runner on base and on a hit managed to work his way around the bases for a run. Going through the lineup Raton posted 10 runs on the very slow pitching of Sam Gilbert. Gilbert’s pitches were often times so slow that the boys were swinging the bat well ahead of the ball but still managed to get several hits and advance runners around the bases. Coach Mike Marez then slowed the boys down holding them to one base and not stealing allowing the Griffins a chance, but it put the team in a slump and they went scoreless in the second and third innings. In the fourth inning Raton came out of the slump and scored six. Santa Fe Prep in the meantime managed to score a single run in the first, third and fourth innings ending the game with a 16-3 win for Raton. Matthew Quartieri was the winning pitcher for Raton with Sam Gilbert taking the loss.

The clouds cleared and the sun finally warmed the field as Cole Medina took the mound for Raton in game two and with strong defensive play Raton held Santa Fe Prep scoreless in the first three innings. Sam Little managed to score the only run for the Griffins in the fourth while Raton scored three, nine and five in the first three innings of the game for the win in five at 17-1. In game two Cole Medina was credited with the win while Jack Veenstra takes the loss for the Griffins.
