Wait, it’s not Friday night, so why is there a football game in Tiger Stadium? A shortage of referees has once again pushed a Raton football game to Thursday from its usual Friday night slot as the 3-3 Raton Tigers hosted the 2-4 Guymon Tigers in the Jungle for a non-conference game.
While the first three quarters of the game went by without a lot of fanfare it held most of the scoring and its fair share of yellow hankies. Cael Walton left the game with a shoulder injury at 6:37 in the second quarter.
The first quarter saw Raton’s Cameron Mascarenas bring the ball out to Raton 39 to begin the game. Seven plays later Raton’s Harlem Coley took the ball over the goal line from three yards out for six. The Cooper King PAT was good at 7:54 for a 7-0 Raton lead.
Guymon’s first series of the game went eight plays before it stalled out and turned the ball over to Raton at the 49. Raton went forwards and backwards with three penalties before they had to turn over the ball on downs at the 37.
Guymon took the ball into the second quarter of play and on their sixth play of the series Andy Ozaeta took a Guymon pass in the endzone for six. The PAT failed on a bad snap and left the score Raton 7-6 at 10:39 in the second quarter.
Raton turns the ball over at the Guymon 41 after eight plays then watches Guymon go 59 yards and end the four-play series with a 28 yard double pass play to Charleston Chapman for six at 3:46 on the clock. The 2-point try failed and left the score Guymon 12-7.
Raton did a seven-play series and turned the ball over, and Guymon went 10 plays but was unable to get the ball over the goal line as the Raton defense stiffened up and forced Guymon to settle for a field goal attempt that was blocked to keep the 12-7 score. Braylon Walton took a knee to end the half.
The third quarter went scoreless with both teams burning up the clock and Raton taking the ball into the fourth quarter. Raton ends up with a quick punt and gives Guymon the ball on the 20 after the kick went into the endzone with 10:27 in the fourth quarter.
Guymon took the ball down the field with five penalties occurring on their drive. After 13 plays Guymon was forced to turn the ball over on downs at the Raton 21. The Braylon Walton pass goes to Gage Alford who breaks away from would be tacklers and races 74 yards to the Guymon five. Three plays later Raton’s Harlem Coley takes the ball in from the six for six at 4:06 on the 4th quarter clock. The 2-point try is good for a 15-12 score after a personal foul penalty moves it half the distance to the goal line.
Guymon’s Andy Ozaeta gets the kickoff return and goes 82 yards for six only to have the ball called back on a block in the back penalty. Guymon gets the ball at the Raton 37. Another pass play to Ozaeta from the 18 goes for six only to have it called back on a holding penalty. Then the clock goes from 1:20 to 1:32 a big advantage for Guymon as they get three plays off in that time and then a roughing the passer penalty at 1:17 moves the ball further down the field to the Raton eight. Two plays later a pass to Charleston Chapman with 53 seconds on the clock adds another six for Guymon. An unsportsmanlike penalty was called after the TD on Guymon with the penalty being assessed on the kickoff, the PAT is good for a 19-15 score.
The penalty was assessed on the kickoff with Guymon kicking off from the 25. On the kickoff Luciano Castillo grabs the ball at the 10-yard line where the referee blows the whistle making it look like he was out of bounds not allowing him to advance the ball. If it was out of bounds, then it should have been a penalty leaving the crowd yelling it was out of bounds and should be moved up field. Raton with only 52 seconds on the clock from the 10-yard line starts the final series of the game. Two plays later Walton is sacked and one more play ends the game with a 19-15 score.
3-4 Raton will now travel down to 4-3 Santa Rosa for their first of three district games for this season on Friday October 16, 2026, for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
