FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 1, 2026
Colfax County Rescinds Burn Ban.
Burn Permits Required for Fires Larger Than Recreational Size
COLFAX COUNTY, NM – In consultation with the District/Municipal Fire Chiefs and
pursuant to Colfax County Ordinance 2006-1, the Colfax County Fire Marshal is
rescinding the County Burn Ban effective October 1, 2026.
This decision follows recent rainfall and the New Mexico State Forester’s announcement
rescinding statewide fire restrictions.
Recent precipitation has helped reduce the threat of wildfire across New Mexico.
According to the State Forester, New Mexico received 236% of average rainfall for
September as of September 28. While these rains have provided some relief, year-to-date
precipitation remains significantly below average, and wildfire prevention continues to be
a priority.
Burn Permits Required
With the rescission of the County Burn Ban, residents are reminded that burn permits are
still required for any fire larger than recreational size. Residents must obtain the
appropriate burn permit before conducting these burning activities.
The rescission of the Burn Ban does not mean wildfire danger has disappeared. Colfax
County strongly encourages residents to remain cautious and responsible when
conducting outdoor burning activities.
The New Mexico State Forester has identified equipment use, debris burning, and
improper disposal of hot ashes as common causes of human-caused wildfires.
Colfax County encourages residents to follow these important fire prevention practices:
Check weather conditions: Only conduct outdoor burning when weather
conditions are favorable. Avoid burning during windy or excessively dry
conditions.
Use caution with equipment: Ensure spark arresters are properly installed and
maintained. Clear noncombustible work areas when using welding, cutting, or
other equipment that may produce sparks.
Never leave fires unattended: Maintain control of all outdoor fires until they are
completely extinguished.
Properly dispose of ashes: Thoroughly drown ashes and ensure they are
completely cool before disposal.
Be prepared: Keep appropriate firefighting tools and water readily available
when conducting outdoor burning.
The County Fire Marshal, in consultation with the District/Municipal Fire Chiefs, will
continue to monitor conditions and evaluate fire danger as necessary.
Colfax County appreciates the cooperation of residents throughout the burn ban and
encourages everyone to continue doing their part to prevent human-caused wildfires.
