In loving Memory of Gilbert R. Mares

Gilbert R. Mares

Gilbert R. Mares, 96, of Springer, New Mexico, passed away unexpectedly on October 16, 2026. He was born on February 4, 1930, in Buena Vista, New Mexico, to Jose and Santitos Mares.

On November 27, 1950, Gilbert married the love of his life, Juanita Apodaca. Together, they raised their family in New Mexico and built a life centered on love and family, creating many lasting memories along the way.

Gilbert worked for many years at the sawmill in Cimarron, New Mexico. When he wasn’t working, he took great pride in tending his garden. He became well known throughout town for his calabacitas—a favorite that reflected his love of gardening.

Gilbert enjoyed making chili and beef jerky, and his grandchildren looked forward to both every summer. They especially loved when he hung the jerky in the room and couldn’t wait for him to take it down. He also enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and was always keeping busy—working, finding something to do, or helping others. Whether driving or walking around town, he greeted people with a smile.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Juanita Mares; his daughter, Pauline DePari; his son, Leonard Mares; his parents, Jose and Santitos Mares; and 13 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his sister, Alfonsa Apodaca, of Springer, New Mexico, and his brother, Abenicio Mares, of Longmont, Colorado. He is also survived by his daughters, Rose Briggs and her partner, Robert Valenzuela, of Springer, New Mexico, and Mary Ann O’Neil and her husband, Mike, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and his beloved daughter-in-law, Denine Mares, of Derby, Kansas.

Gilbert’s legacy lives on through his seven grandchildren: Nicole Herrera, Jessica DePari, April Blatchford, James Butler, Joseph DePari, Renne O’Neil, and Tierza Rose Torrez; his 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He will also be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Gilbert will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The love he shared and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of his family for generations to come.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be on October 30, 2026, at 10:00 am, recited by Los Hermano’s/Penitentes – La Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am with Father Trieu as the Celebrant. Internment will follow in the Springer Cemetery.
