The Raton Police Department is continuing its investigation into a suspicious death after a deceased female was located at a residence in Raton on Sunday, September 20.
Earlier in the week, the Raton Police Department received a missing person report regarding a female believed to be in the Raton area. Officers conducted efforts to locate the individual while the investigation remained active.
At approximately 3:37 p.m. on September 20, 2026, the Raton Police Department received reports of a deceased person inside an abandoned and dilapidated trailer located at 1133 Price Street, Space 13. Responding officers arrived on scene and discovered the body of a female whose clothing was consistent with the description of the missing person.
The deceased female was transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) for examination and identification. OMI investigators in Albuquerque have since positively identified the decedent as Josephine Michelle Tafoya (50) of Holman, New Mexico.
Due to the circumstances surrounding the discovery, the case is currently being investigated as asuspicious death. While an autopsy has been completed, investigators are continuing to work closely with the Office of the Medical Investigator to determine the manner and cause of death. At this time, no additional information regarding potential foul play is being released.
