The quality-of-life grant money came in quick with a short life span, but Public Works Director Jason Phillips managed to get contractors lined up and moving to get most of the work done by the June 30 deadline.
He also managed to get an extension on the $1,035,370 grant so that the city could get the rest of the work done that they wanted to complete. According to Parks and Recreation director JR Alderette the new playground equipment was installed and approved, then opened to the public on September 2, 2026, and soon after local kids were on the new equipment enjoying the ships and swings and one large turtle.
2.1 miles of eight-foot-wide paving was placed down by contractors widening the path by two feet. Along the path there are new exercise equipment for walkers to use. Currently there are nine exercise station mostly on the south side of the walking paths with three ADA compliant exercise stations too.
Other improvements include new Disc Golf cages. Currently there are 18 cages, and the city is planning to expand the course to 27 cages by adding nine more cages to the north of the Aquatic Center. The city has an 18-hole course at the country club giving disc golfers two challenging course to use. Alderette noted that he has had several players stop by and play the course as they travel through the area.
Other improvements include a new scoreboard at Bonahoom Park along with new infield dirt. Bonahoom Park is now considered to be a part of the Roundhouse Park making it a multi-use facility.
According to Phillips the work that has been done so far has used $776,643.44 of the grant. The expansion of the disc golf, new scoreboard and other improvements at Bonahoom will use the remainder of the Regional Recreation Quality of Life Grant.
