Colfax SO Investigates Death at Vigil Maldonado Detention Center

COLFAX COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES DEATH AT VIGIL-
MALDONADO DETENTION CENTER

The Colfax County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 65-year-old man, who was in custody at the Vigil-Maldonado Detention Center on Saturday August 8, 2026.  The Union County resident had been in custody for 276 days while awaiting trial.

At approximately 8:12 a.m., detention personnel, while conducting a security check found the male lying unresponsive on the floor of his cell. Raton EMS was dispatched to the detention center at approximately 8:15 a.m. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Miner’s Colfax Medical Center, where the male was later pronounced deceased.

The Colfax County Sheriff’s Office responded and is actively investigating in conjunction with the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator to determine the official cause and manner of death. The investigation remains open pending completion of the medical investigation and review of all available records and evidence. The investigation has not identified evidence of criminal activity.

The Colfax County Sheriff’s Office and Vigil Maldonado Detention Center extends its condolences to the family. The deceased’s family has been notified. At the family’s request, his identity will not be included in this initial release.
