Public Safety Crews Early Morning Busy Day

Wednesday, August 5th, 2026, started early for first responders as Union County was notified of a multi-vehicle accident on US 64/87 about mile marker 401 around 4:00 a.m. Mile marker 401 is just west of Grenville.

Upon arrival Union County Sheriff’s deputies encountered a passenger car that had struck the trailer of a semi-truck and was wedged deep under the tail end of the trailer. Sheriff Curtis Skaggs noted the sheriff’s office had been on the scene all day with the investigation as the accident resulted in multiple fatalities. Names of the victims are being with held pending notification of next of kin and other details were not yet available as of late Thursday afternoon. The accident closed down the west bound lanes of US 64/87 with traffic being diverted into the east bound lanes for two-way traffic until mid afternoon Wednesday.

In Colfax County a pickup pulling a camper trailer was coming down Raton Pass when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned coming to rest on its top and the camper trailer was totally destroyed. One person from that accident was transported by ambulance to the MCMC. I-25 was reopened around 4:00p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

While that was going on Union County received a call about 1:40 p.m. of another accident on Highway 72 at mile marker 33. The vehicle was found on its side upon arrival of deputies.

All of these accidents are currently under investigation and other details have not been made available as of 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.
