Power Lifting returned to Raton and Tiger Gym as Raton hosted their second meet of the season Saturday morning with weigh in beginning at about 7:00 a.m. with six teams competing in the meet.
Des Moines and Raton were the newbies to the meet as this is their first year of competition in power lifting. Teams competed in a squat lift, bench press followed by the dead lift. Each lifter had three lifts to max out the weight they could lift. The weight is then totaled up to determine the winner in each weight class and an overall and team winners.
Jerry Archuleta an 8th grader from Clayton was the overall winner of the meet. His total weight came in at 1215 pounds (Squat 420, Bench 295, and Dead Lift 500). The next closest weight was CJ Perea from West Las Vegas with 1145 followed by Mason Valdez from Clayton at 1130 pounds. The Clayton boys team took first place in the meet followed by West Las Vegas, Raton, Cimarron with a tie between Des Moines and Robertson for fifth place. The Las Vegas girls team took first place followed by Des Moines in the girls division. Jesslyn Ortiz from West Las Vegas lifted a total of 650 pounds followed byDes Moines’ Jadyn Atwater with 625 pounds and Gabriella Lucero from West Las Vegas topped out at 530 pounds.
Raton Power Lifters Jennifer Mattorano and Russell Simmons both qualified for state at the meet Saturday.
