Clayton High Cheer Back to Back Class A-2A Championships

Clayton High School Cheer under third year Coach Lynette Keeth joins Raton High in the winner’s circle as they too bring home a second Blue Trophy for Class A-2A Cheer at the State Spirit Competition Friday afternoon May 14, 2021 in Albuquerque.
This year’s competition had a bit different format as all of cheer performed on Friday with dance getting all of their performances done on Saturday. The format was developed to help reduce the numbers of teams and spectators in the Pit in order to meet group numbers restriction for the state health order.
Clayton Cheer travelled to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque with hopes of bringing home another blue trophy after winning the Class A-2A state title in 2019 after a one-year hiatus because of Covid. Coach Keeth noted it has been a tough year for Clayton Cheer as they have had to balance practices amongst other sports games and practices. She noted that several of her team members also play other sports such as softball, track and baseball.
Clayton cheer started the season out with about 20 members and as things moved along lost about half the team. Wanting to come into the state competition with at least 12 students on the team they recruited a former team member Kilee Mireles and Andres Montoya who they affectionately nicknamed King Kong for his size and the strength he brough to the team.
In the first round of competition, Game Day Cheer, Clayton bested second place Melrose by 10 points and continued the streak with another solid performance in Cheer with Music. Clayton outscored Melrose 143.15 to 131.90 once the scores were totaled up and posted Friday night after the competition concluded in the one-day event.
