Friends of County Road 85.5 4×4 Event Rescheduled for Sept. 19

Lloyd Rosecrans and H.L. Bowman have started a small group of avid 4 wheelers who enjoy driving on challenging roads.  Their local road of choice is County Road 85.5 in Las Animas County.  The road is very rough, rock and dirt, one lane, and only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  The road is quite an adventure, even for a 4 wheel drive vehicle.  Traveling from east of Trinidad, the road climbs a steep wooded valley to the border with New Mexico.  The road then continues down a grass-covered valley leading to Sugarite Park in New Mexico.

In June, the 4×4 event asked $20 donations per vehicle and was able to raise $200 for local animal shelters including Noah’s Ark in Trinidad, and the Raton Animal Shelter.  As animal lovers, they were proud to donate 100% of the proceeds.

On September 19, 2020, at 8:00 a.m. the participants will assemble at the old Kmart parking lot in Raton, NM.  The group will leave for Sugarite Canyon at 9:00 a.m.  Please follow all masks and distancing requirements.

This is an opportunity to get out of the house and have some safe family fun.  This is a beautiful drive behind Fishers Peak, through rarely seen areas of Colorado and New Mexico.  There is no fee to travel on this road, however, a $20 donation is asked for the animal shelters.

A map of the route will be provided at the start of the rally.  Join us for some adventure!

Once again, this is a 4 wheel drive road only.

Follow the animal shelters on FaceBook and maybe adopt a new best friend!
