Trinidad, CO: Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association announced that in just four short months of 2020, the 501c3 nonprofit organization recycled 17,741 pounds of unusable/discarded clothing and shoes through their Noah’s Ark Thrift Store’s Clothes for Critters program. The haul equates to 2,400 cubic square feet of used textiles that would otherwise have been dumped into the Trinidad landfill. Instead of going into the landfill, the fabrics and shoes will be processed by specialized companies and ultimately made into other usable items for consumers. NAAWA continues to work toward their goal of being a green organization and helping their community. “Noah’s Ark deeply cares about the welfare of animals, yes! We also deeply care about our community and our planet,” says Laurel Young, Executive Director at Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association. “We appreciate and honor the interconnections between all species. Recycling serves as a simple, yet powerful vehicle for us to do our part to make our environment better for all – for now and for the future. The recent recycle consisted of four months’ worth of discarded clothing and if we can meet our goal of doing two more recycle loads of the same value this year, we will have recycled nearly 54,000 tons of clothing in 2020, saving the local landfill from 7,200 cubic square feet. We want to give a great big thank you to Maniscalco Brothers & Sons, Inc. for the storage accommodations they generously provide every month to help make the clothing recycle possible. We also want to give a big thank you to our employees who physically make the clothing recycle happen; it’s a great deal of work on loading day. The clothing recycle program also wouldn’t be possible without our generous supporters who donate to and shop at our thrift store. By the way, if anyone within the community happens to have an adjustable conveyor belt that we could rent for clothing recycle a few times a year, please contact us, it would be a huge help.”
NAAWA earns money by the pound for recycled clothing and shoes; the funds earned directly support their shelter animals and community programs. NAAWA invites the community to become partners with them in recycling and in helping animals through these additional established programs:
• Cartridges for Critters: NAAWA accepts used/empty ink cartridges at the shelter or at the thrift store. The cartridges are recycled; earning funds to help the organization.
• Cans for Critters: NAAWA accepts bagged donations of empty aluminum cans at the collection bin (located in the shelter parking lot). The cans are recycled while earning money to help animals.
• Cars for Critters: You can donate your used vehicle to NAAWA and it can help make money for homeless animals.
• Volunteer: NAAWA invites the community to join their team as a volunteer. Whether it is helping out with loading the clothing recycle truck, walking dogs, reading to cats, fostering pets, answering phones, tending kennels, folding clean laundry, or helping out at their thrift store – there is a place for everyone who wants to help make a “pawsitive” difference in the world.
This news is a reminder of some of the other ways NAAWA recycles:
• Local liquor stores save their cardboard flats for NAAWA; the organization is able to reuse them as litter boxes or cat beds.
• NAAWA recycles the cardboard, paper, plastic, metal, and glass produced from operating the shelter and thrift store – all of their employees recycle while at work.
• NAAWA accepts donations of clean newspaper from local newspapers and from community members. The newspaper is used to line kennels.
