TRINIDAD, Colo., April 22, 2019 – The Downtown Trinidad Development Group (DTDG) will be hosting an unveiling celebration for the ongoing renovation project of the historic Trinidad National Bank building on Friday, May 3rd, from 4:30 – 6:00pm. All are welcome to attend the community celebration.
Occupying 125-37 N. Commercial Street, The Trinidad National Bank building was built in the late 1800s by architects Gates & Huff. The original owner, Charles Poitrey, envisioned that the building “would be built on an elegant block” on land that was then the site of the Park Stable, Butz’s Saloon, and Motto’s confectionery store. At that time, The Trinidad Daily News opined that “this will be one of the best improvements ever made in this city.” *
120 years later, this landmark building will again play a leading role in the growth and commercial development of downtown Trinidad. It was considered to be the most beautiful building west of the Mississippi at the time it was built. It will also house a historical hall honoring the Champions of Trinidad starting with Sister Blandina, John Gagliardi, J Edgar Chenoweth, and forward to our present-day Champions.
Keeping the integrity of the building’s infrastructure, the building will include professional services plus restaurant and bar space on the main floor and an outdoor atrium on the second floor. Additional entertainment and gaming are planned in the “underground level” of this historic building.
The Trinidad National Bank building will have facade elements similar to when the building was originally built. Extra care was taken to save and store the deconstructed facade until it was needed to return to its original place. DTDG started the historic renovation project in February, 2016.
“During the renovation project, we have to again thank our contractors and team for the sensitive deconstruction and restoration of the facade and building interiors.”, said Karl Gabrielson, DTDG’s General Manager.
Prior to the unveiling celebration, at 4 p.m., the DTDG will also hold a ground-breaking ceremony to begin construction on the new Hilton Garden Inn, located at La Puerta de Colorado, at the junction of Interstate 25 and Commercial Street in the heart of Trinidad. Hotelier and Trinidad advocate, Cy Michaels, will be a partner and general manager of the new hotel.
