New Mexico fishing and stocking reports for Nov. 28, 2017

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week

  • Lake Maloya: Kerry Medina of Raton caught a 22-inch, 3-pound, 10-ounce brown trout Nov. 26. He was using a black leech Joes fly.
  • Rio Grande River: Diego Baca of Rio Rancho caught a 29-inch walleye Nov. 24. He was fishing the river near Bernalillo and using a silver spoon. Gerry Liberty of Los Lunas caught a 30.5-inch, 9-pound channel catfish Nov. 24. She was fishing the river near Isleta and using chicken liver.
  • Tingley Beach: Cousins George Perez, 9 of Bernalillo and Preston Lawson, 7 and Parker Lawson, 8 of Albuquerque, had a great day at the Youth Pond. They caught several rainbow trout while using corn.

The following report came in late but deserves a mention:

  • Alumni Pond: First-time anglers Rowdy Calderon, 11, and brother Xavier Calderon, 14, caught limits of trout Nov. 18. They were using PowerBait and Fire Balls.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Closed for the season.

Clayton Lake:  Closed for the season.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 8.43 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using jig and minnow combinations, spoons and blade baits for walleye. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 1.23 cfs. Check this one out next spring.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait for rainbow trout. Fishing for all other species was slow. Kokanee snagging was slow. Fishing pressure was light. The boat docks have been pulled but anglers can still launch boats.  Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and Joes flies for trout.

Los Pinos River: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms and bead-head prince nymphs for trout.

Maxwell Lake 13: Closed for the season.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls for trout.

Morphy Lake:  Closed for the season.

Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 43.0 cfs. Fishing was fair using bead-head prince nymphs, San Juan worms, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for brown and rainbow trout.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 62.1 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs and small bead-head nymphs for trout.

Red River City Ponds: Closed for the season.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 693 cfs. Before the latest rise in the flows, fishing was good using prince nymphs, crane flies, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, small mayfly nymphs, Panther Martins, worms and salmon eggs for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 17.2 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 10.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 15.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was slow.

Shuree Ponds:  We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing for walleye was slow with just a few caught by anglers using blade baits and spoons at 35 to 45 feet. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the mid 50s and the water was murky.

Tingley cousins

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Action was slow for some but fair to good for others fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass and trout. Anglers fishing from the dock reported catching brown and rainbow trout while using Rapalas and PowerBait. From boats, the best action was reported by walleye anglers using blade baits and spoons. A few smallmouth bass were caught by anglers using small grubs, tubes and senkos. We had no other reports.

Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 286 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Trout fishing was reported as very good on the Albuquerque, Belen and Corrales drains. Best baits were meal worms, PowerBait, Fire Balls, small grubs, micro mays and custom tied nymphs. We had no other reports.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing for tiger muskies and catfish was slow.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 501 cfs and 839 cfs respectively. Fishing above El Vado was good using copper John Barrs, bead-head hares ear nymphs, PowerBait and worms for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below El Vado was good using wooly buggers, spinners, night crawlers and Fire Balls for brown and rainbow trout. Roberto Archuleta of Espanola celebrated his birthday by catching a limit of nice fat rainbows while fishing near the village of Chama. He was using salmon eggs and PowerBait under a split shot.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow with just a few walleye and bass caught by anglers using jigs and crank baits.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Fenton Lake: Fishing continued to be very good from the bank and from boats. Anglers did well using PowerBait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, spoons and spinners.  Travis Lewis of Los Lunas caught a limit of 9.5 to 12-inch rainbows on the 24th. He was using a green and silver lure.

Heron Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs from the bank for rainbow trout. Kokanee snagging was slow. We had no other reports.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was good using small Kastmasters, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 24.0 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was good using copper John Barrs, custom tied mop flies, Fire Balls and worms for trout. Trout fishing on the lower Cebolla was fair to good using worms and Fire Balls. We had no other reports.

Laguna del Campo: Closed for the season.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair to good using garlic PowerBait, salmon egg corn combinations and worms for trout. Andrea Leon, 13, of Belen, had an awesome time fishing here this past week with her mom and dad. They caught nine rainbow trout ranging in size from 9 to 13 inches. They were using a variety of baits with the best being Gulp cheese flavored pinched worms.  We had no other reports.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, plastic worms, grubs, senkos and swim baits worked slow for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using swim baits, chatter baits and jigs for northern pike. A few trout were caught by anglers trolling crank baits and fishing from the bank with salmon eggs. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 387 cfs. Fly fishing action through the Quality waters was good for anglers using rootbeers, brassies, small zebra midges, crystal flash emergers, RS2, comparaduns, red larva, parachute adams and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using salmon eggs, wooly worms, PowerBait, worms, prince nymphs, copper John Barrs and bead-head pheasant tail nymphs.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, spoons, spinners, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and bead-head pheasant tail nymphs for trout. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was fair to good using small leech patterns, San Juan worms and custom tied mop flies for trout. We had no other reports.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Alumni Pond

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Fishing was fair to good using midge patterns, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. One catfish was caught by an angler using cheese flavored stink bait.

Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spoons, worms and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was fair using Super Dupers, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using blade baits, spoons, curly tail grubs and jig and minnow combinations for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using Ned rigs, senkos, jigs, curly tail grubs and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, live bait, night crawlers, liver and homemade dough baits for catfish. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 60s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was very good using Pistol Petes, Super Dupers, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 56.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was good using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rancho Grande Ponds: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.70 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing for trout was great during the week but slowed dramatically over the weekend. Best baits were assorted PowerBait.
