In Loving Memory of Jennie (Janie) Cunico Scott

Jennie (Janie) Cunico Scott passed away at her home in Roy on September 14, 2016, just about one month shy of her 99th birthday.

She was born October 22, 1917, in Raton, New Mexico to Italian immigrants Joe and Marcalina Cunico. The youngest of eight children, Jennie spent her childhood helping her family on their ranch, milking cows, and daily survival in the 1920’s. She graduated from Kiowa High School and shortly thereafter was asked to play basketball for the American Redheads, a semi-pro team in that day. Her strict parents would not let her however, and she moved on to other endeavors, though she would always wonder if she could have made it playing basketball.

Jennie married Allen Scott in February of 1945. They had a blended family. Jennie had a two year old son from a former marriage, (Skipper); Allen a two year old son, (Ronnie). This might have been an obstacle for most couples but not so with these two. The boys being the same age grew up as brothers. Later they had a daughter (Tootie) and the family was complete.

cunico-jJennie worked various jobs while raising their family including punching numbers at the phone company, clerking at the City Market, and working at Rigoni’s Bar. She was happiest when she was around people. She was an avid sports fan, rarely missing a game played by her children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren. She claimed most of the kids in Roy as her own. She was known lovingly as Mimi Scott and her door was always open to friends and visitors.

After the death of her husband, Allen, in 1990, she worked at the Roy Elementary School helping to take care of the little ones and answer phones. Mimi Scott remained independent and active into her 90’s and could be seen driving her buddies around the community or visiting on the bench in front of the local store. She was a loving wife and mother and her family always came first. Her quick wit and smile was infectious and was with her throughout her lifetime. She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed greatly.

Jennie was preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, her husband Allen, and her son Ronnie Scott.

She is survived by son, Louis McEwen of Sherman, Illinois and daughter Tootie Clavel of Roy; nine grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren, and many wonderful friends.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held Saturday, September 24, 2016 at the Harding County Community Building in Roy at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests, that for those who wish, donations may be made to the Roy Municipal School or a charity of your choice in loving memory of Jennie C. Scott.

Arrangements and celebration of love for Jennie Cunico Scott are under the direction of the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home of Raton.
