Raton Baseball Season/Home Opener Falls Short

By Marty Mayfield

KRTN-Multi-Media

Raton Tiger baseball took to Gabriele Field Saturday afternoon for their home and season opener against the Taos Tigers for a double header.

Coach Mike Mares told KRTN before the game that he expected that this game would show some of the areas that the Tigers will need work on and that it did as Raton not only lost both games but the games were ended after five innings on the 10-run rule.

While Raton connected with the ball during the game they had difficulty completing, leaving runners on base or not even making it on base. While the Tigers have seven seniors on the team this year they have several longer players as well which Mares hopes will grow this season and help the team come district time.

Taos on the other hand put the ball deep in the outfield where the ball found open ground and allowed runners to advance on the bases or cross home plate. To compound Raton’s problems on defense Raton players made several errors over throwing or putting the ball in the dirt. Part of these issues could be attributed to the fact that Raton hasn’t been on the field very much this year as bad weather has kept them off the diamond to practice those throws.
