ENMU Sports to Help Former Des Moines Sports Mom

PORTALES–Eastern New Mexico University Athletic Director Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced the start of its “Kash for Karen” Campaign to help raise funds to help department administrative assistant Karen Doherty. Mrs. Doherty joined the ENMU athletic department but has been in the hospital and physical therapy since contracting West Nile Virus in September.

Kash for Karen will work as follows: Sponsors will make a pledge based on how many points the Greyhound and Zia basketball teams will score this season. To help donors determine the amount of your pledge, last year the Greyhounds scored 2,039 points for the season. The Zias scored 1,651. The grand total was 3,690 points between the teams.

Based on a prediction that the Hounds and Zias will score 4,000 points combined during the upcoming seasons, a pledge of one-quarter cent per point will raise $10 for the Kash for Karen Fund. A person pledging one-half cent per point will donate $20. A donation of one cent per point will raise $40.

To take part in the campaign, pledges can be made at the ENMU athletic office, by calling (575) 562-2153, emailing (jeff.geiser@enmu.edu), or by using the form on the website. Checks can be dropped off or mailed to Kash for Karen, C/O ENMU Athletics, Station 17, Portales, N.M. 88130.

“On behalf of Karen and the Doherty Family I would love to see this campaign explode,” said Dr. Geiser. “If we can grow per point pledges to one dollar per point and the Hounds and Zias combine to score 4000 points, this will mean $4000 to the family. Two dollars a point will make $8,000! I encourage everyone associated with Eastern New Mexico University to get behind this endeavor. And since Jim Doherty is a local high school basketball coach at Melrose, we hope that the area schools will get behind the Kash for Karen campaign as well.”

Think big! By combining all pledges we could eventually reach one dollar per point. This means we will raise two dollars for every two-point basket and three dollars for a three pointer. Pledges combined to equal two dollars per point will mean four dollars for a basket and whopping six dollars for every basket from behind the arc.
