New Mexico State Police In Las Vegas Involved In Shooting

San Miguel County- On May 8, 2014 at about 4:30 p.m. New Mexico State Police Officers were dispatched to a residence on Castle Drive in Las Vegas to conduct a welfare check on a reportedly suicidal male identified as Arcenio Lujan, 48, of Las Vegas.

Upon arrival, Officers made contact with Mr. Lujan at his residence. Throughout the next thirty to forty five minutes, Officers observed Mr. Lujan exit and enter the residence with a long rifle numerous times. During this time, the Officers made numerous attempts to reason and plead with Mr. Lujan to cooperate with them.

Finally, Mr. Lujan exited his fenced yard area and pointed the long rifle at the Officers while aggressively approaching them. The Officers were forced to fire in defense of their lives, striking Mr. Lujan.

Mr. Lujan died at the scene.

This is an ongoing investigation. The names of the Officers involved will be released at a later time. As more details become available, they will be released.

Downed Pole Causes Small Grass Fire

Just after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon RPS and Raton Fire were called to the 300 block of Clark Ave for a report of a pole down and grass fire.

Upon arrival RPS found that a light pole at the corner of Clark and Fourth had fallen onto Clark Ave. The drop wire from a power pole in the alley between Fourth and Third had broken and sparks had caused a small patch of grass in front of a home to catch fire. The fire was quickly extinguished by fire fighters while an RPS crew removed the pole from the street.

No injuries were reported, RPS suspects that the pole had become rotten and was toppled by the high winds that plagued the region.

RPS crew removes a light pole that blew over on the corner of 4th and Clark Wednesday afternoon. The pole broke the drop wire which sparked and caught a small patch of grass on fire.
