Lake Maloya Hosts Master of the Mountain

By Marty Mayfield

Lake Maloya saw cool grey skies Saturday morning for the inaugural Master of the Mountain Adventure Relay race. A competition made up of eight teams and nine individual male contestants and five individual female participants.

The run consisted of a six-mile course with elevation over 8,000 feet and rugged country made more challenging by rains over the last few days. The course started at the Lake Maloya boat ramp and went over the dam to the trail that goes up and around Little Horse Mesa by Soda Pocket campground and back down to the lake.

The kayak course was a three-mile trip around the lake. The field by this time had really spread out and by the time the last runners were making their way back to the boat ramp the first kayakers were coming back around.

From the ramp fresh team riders took off to complete the 20 mile trek to the NRA Whittington Center Rendezvous site off state highway 555. Those individuals who ran the whole course themselves were glad for the down hill park of the course that drops from the 7,511 feet on the dam to the 6,600 feet in town.

Once the cyclist arrived at the Rendezvous site they still had two water crossings that had running water again from the recent rains in the area. The shotgun course was a five-station tactical course requiring shooters to shoot from behind barriers and on the muddy ground in the prone position. Two of the stations had clay pigeons while the last station was a walking station. Again all of this was timed for the final score.

Yet the competition was a tough one. In the men’s division there was only a two-minute separation between winner John Winkley (2:42:30.7) and second place Santiago Gamboa (2:44:45.4).  14 minutes separated the first four men’s competitors. Marlo Valdez won the women’s individual in a time of 3:57:36 just 21 minutes faster than second place Erin Wakefield. The Jorts Crew took first in the team competition with a time of 2:39:09.2 followed by Team Paradox Beer Co. with a time of 2:47:35.3. The Abq Guys ran the team short course in a time of 3:00:37.5.  For complete results and more information about the event go to www.ratonmom.com  .

Raton Parks and Recreation, Jarred Chatterly who was the primary behind getting this event off the ground deemed the event a great success. He noted the many people and organizations such as New Mexico State Parks for their help in making the event a success. Prepare for next year when the event will be held on September 13, 2014.
