Raton Fire and Emergency Services along with Fisher’s Peak Fire were called to an RV fire about 12:03 p.m. on Raton Pass just below the top on the Trinidad side of the pass that closed I-25 south bound for over an hour.
The Fisher’s Peak Fire Chief was on scene first followed by the Raton Fire units as traffic had already begun to back up on the south bound side of the interstate hampering travel for the Fisher’s Peak units. Raton Fire personnel began the attack on the fire but the RV was fully engulfed by the time they arrived and could only keep it from spreading. The vehicle that RV was towing was saved and there were no injuries to the couple from Mississippi.
CSP Troopers shut the interstate down in both direction opening up northbound about 20 minutes later and finally opening the left lane of south bound traffic about 1:35 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation but the unit was a total loss.
