Grow Raton recreated a ribbon cutting held 25 years ago when the North Underpass was redone and reopened for traffic between north and south Raton.
Back in May of 2025 the City of Raton requested $54,500 for engineering and planning for work on the North Underpass. In December the city approved a bid of $293,790 from H.O. Construction for the North Underpass rehabilitation project. It was noted that their bid was quite a bit lower than the three other bids received and according to Tyler Davis with Engineering Analytics, it was because H.O. opted to do the required painting in house instead of subcontracting.
The MAP grant that Public Works Director Jason Phillip wrote for the project had a NMDOT share of $301,133 and a City share of $100,378 for a total project cost of $401,511.
The North Underpass was closed for a few days while the concrete work was completed and then periodically during the painting process. Raton now has a refreshed and nice looking underpass that many Raton residents use on a daily basis.
