The planning and zoning commission heard three proposals from landowners that request the vacation of alley ways in northeast Raton as well as a subdivision request near the railroad tracks west of Kearny Ave in south Raton and a request to allow grazing to mitigate fire danger at 1620 South Second Street in south Raton.
Si Trujillo is requesting the city vacate alleyways on land that belonged to Jim and Flo Roper so that he can use it for grazing 4-H livestock. The city commission received the plat and approved it. It is now back to the P&Z Commission for their final approval and then back to the city commission for their final approval. The P&Z Commission approved the final plat.
Lumen Technologies is requesting to purchase 4.6 acres of property near the railroad tracks for a 20×12 building for fiber optic relay facility which is just outside the city limits in the ETZ. In order to purchase just 4.6 acres from the 55 plus acres the property needs to be subdivided, which is the issue before the commission today. The land will be used for fiber optic signal regeneration and utilize two to six buildings for this purpose. The buildings will house the equipment needed to recondition the fiber optic signal for the long-haul fibers that run through the area from El Paso to Denver.
All the Planning and Zoning Commission is required to do is to deliberate the subdivision request and are not concerned with what the property will be used for. The property is zoned for communications or utility purposes. The commission approved the subdivision and will move the request on to the Raton City Commission.
Vinkay, LLC, is requesting a special exemption to allow grazing on the old racetrack property in south Raton for fire mitigation purposes. The commission approved this request last year and approved it again this year requesting that only cattle be allowed on the property.
