In Loving Memory of Joseph “Little Joe” Sanchez

Joseph “Little Joe” Sanchez

( May 26, 1942 – May 12, 2024 )

Joseph Sanchez, age 81, known to many as “Little Joe,” passed away on May 12, 2024, at his home in Maxwell, New Mexico, surrounded by family. Joseph was born on May 26, 1942, in Miami, New Mexico.  Joseph reunites in death with his beloved wife Mary Jo Sanchez who preceded him in 2014, his father David Sanchez, his mother Mary Annie Gonzales Sanchez, and his sister Rose Velasquez.

Little Joe was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family. He was happiest when he was fishing in the tranquil waters of his favorite spots or camping with his family and friends. His passion for New Mexico Spanish music was infectious. Many will fondly recall the warmth of his company over a cold drink and tales of days gone by. His humor, quick wit, and good-natured spirit will forever be missed.

Drafted in 1966 by the US Army,  he served his country with valor and distinction with his boots on the ground in Vietnam from ’67 to ’68. He later continued his military service in the NM Army National Guard. His patriotism and sacrifice stand as a true testament to his character.

Mourning his loss while celebrating his life are his children: Son- Joe Sanchez Jr.  (wife Christina), daughter Melissa Sanchez, daughter Patricia Salazar, and son John Sanchez.

His spirit lives on in his adoring grandchildren—Deiandra, Roxann, Leiandra, Adrian (wife Santana), Aaron, Islaya, Sienna, and Ashlynne—and his six great-grandchildren Adriana, Jordan, Brianna,  Dorian, Adalyn & Jaxyn. Joe will also be greatly missed by his siblings. Sisters Theresa LeDoux & Martha Lindsay, brothers David Sanchez (Cecelia), Billy Sanchez (Agatha), Eddie Sanchez (Sandy), Elmer Sanchez, and brother-in-law William Velasquez.

Joseph “Little Joe” Sanchez’s memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him. His story is that of a man who lived with honor, loved deeply, and left a permanent mark on the hearts of his family and all who knew and loved him. He’s probably up there swapping stories with the angels, fishing in heavenly streams, and keeping everyone on their celestial toes. Ride on, Little Joe, ride on.
