Richard Coleman Metcalf
( January 17, 1940 – March 16, 2023 )
Richard Coleman “Dick” Metcalf died peacefully at home in Raton on March 16, after a long fight with COPD.
He was preceded in death by his parents Willard and Faun Metcalf. He is survived by his aunt Berlinda Hurmence; brother Douglas Metcalf and sister-in-law Becky, nieces Jill O’Brien and Jan Bolick and their families; son Cole, daughter-in-law Nichole, and granddaughter Bella; and wife Phyllis Mayfield and her daughters Anathea Griego and Tanya Knox.
He was born in Wichita Falls, TX, was an Eagle Scout, and graduated from high school there before joining the Navy in 1957 serving on active duty until 1980. He received Good Conduct medals, Vietnam service medals, and two Bronze Stars. He was proud to be a submariner and served five tours in Vietnam, mostly on “swift boats.”
After retirement in San Diego, CA, he moved to the Angel Fire/Eagle Nest area where his parents were living and worked for Angel Fire Resort in security and later as an assistant pro for the golf course. After he moved to Raton, he joined the Elks Lodge and served as its Exalted Ruler, became a lifetime member of the VFW, and worked various jobs. He had been an avid golfer and enjoyed a hole-in-one on October 22, 2000, on Hole #17 at Angel Fire Resort. His activities dwindled over the years of his sickness.
He will be missed by his friends and family. A Navy service will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Angel Fire on May 25, 2023, at 1 p.m. with a celebration of life for family and close friends afterward.
Arrangements for Richard Coleman “Dick” Metcalf are under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home.
